Replacing working facilities is a major decision—and a major investment. So when Region of Peel decided to decommission three older thermal incinerator units in favor of a long-term solution, they knew the system would have to pay for itself many times over.

The municipality turned to SUEZ with an ambitious request: to design and supervise the construction of a biosolids treatment solution that would take them far into the 21st century. Mindful of time and expense, we worked to decommission the existing units while bringing online the world’s largest fluid bed installation—a thermal oxidation system capable of processing 400 metric tons of sludge per day. The new system increases capacity by 150%, improves air quality, reduces sludge hauling by 97% and dramatically cuts operating costs. Guaranteed to meet regional needs until 2031, the system offers a proven solution to North American municipalities that see greater capacity, sustainability and cost efficiency in their future.

Hedge Against Drought

Victoria Desalination Project


Located in Melbourne, Australia, this stunning plant is a vital part of Victoria’s water system that provides a rainfall-independent source of drinking water throughout the state.

In coordination with Suez, on a massive scale, designers have employed a two-pass reverse osmosis process that guarantees a sustainable, “drought proof” water supply for people who depend on it. With a design life of 100 years, the Victorian plant can supply up to 450 MLD of drinking water a day and was named the 2013 Desalination Plant of the Year. With a size and scale suited for the drought-like conditions that plague the U.S., the technology opens doors for high- and low-density areas that have to pay a price for inefficient or distant delivery from the source.

Making Water Better

Haworth Water Treatment Plant


Last expanded in 1989, the 200-million-gallon-per-day Haworth Water Treatment Plant has a reputation for keeping up with technology. So it was no surprise to its 800,000 New Jersey customers when it set a new benchmark for advanced surface water treatment plants.

The company partnered with Suez in a $100 million upgrade that installed a new DAF system that cut particulates in pretreatment by over 90%, upgraded residuals treatment to eliminate the need for discharge and raised nationwide standards for quality drinking water. Haworth is now the largest U.S. plant to use DAF. More importantly, it serves as a model to treatment centers across North America who could expand their purification capabilities, produce more water for more uses, and put less strain on their resources.
