Polluted water in our oceans, rivers and lakes poses countless risks. It can endanger our wildlife, threaten the waters where we fish and swim and make our drinking water unsafe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supports the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act by setting stringent regulations that ensure hundreds of millions of Americans have access to a safe, reliable supply of drinking water every day. Water systems must be regularly monitored using EPA-approved testing methods to ensure they are free of contaminants.

Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and delivering clean water is our top priority. Our highly trained and licensed treatment professionals work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide premier service and superior quality. Some of our treatment processes include granular activated carbon (GAC), Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), ozone generation and UV disinfection systems.

 

We regularly test water before, during and after the treatment process to ensure it meets or surpasses regulatory standards, monitoring for lead, copper and corrosion. SUEZ technologies help to maintain water quality from treatment to tap. In fact, we issue an Annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) for every water source we touch, demonstrating how our drinking water measures up to regulatory standards.

Raising quality standards

Last expanded in 1989, the 200-million-gallon-per-day NJDEP-certified Haworth Water Treatment Plant had maintained a reputation for keeping up with technology while serving its New Jersey customers. In June 2007, it set a new benchmark for advanced surface water treatment plants and raised nationwide standards for quality drinking water.

 

SUEZ invested in a $100 million upgrade — the largest and most extensive in its history — that included new ozone generation and contacting facilities, new residuals treatment and disposal facilities and new SCADA system. In addition, we upgraded residuals treatment to eliminate the need for discharge and installed a new DAF system to cut particulates in pretreatment by over 90%. DAF is used for sedimentation clarification to improve water quality, enhance service reliability, reduce chemical and energy use and protect sensitive ecosystems.

 

The project was completed without interrupting water service in 2009 — several months ahead of schedule and under budget — and earned SUEZ several prestigious awards including the Design-Build Institute of America Project of the Year Award, the Academy of Environmental Engineers 2010 Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award and the EPA Environmental Quality Award.

 

Haworth is now the largest U.S. plant to use DAF for sedimentation clarification. More importantly, it serves as a model to treatment centers across the world looking to expand their purification capabilities, produce more water for additional capabilities and put less of a strain on their resources. On an average day, the plant treats over 100 MGD, which is pumped through over 2,000 miles of water mains to over 1 million people across 60 communities — enough to stretch the length of New Jersey over 13 times.
